WHAT IS TRADITIONAL
CHINESE MASSAGE? (TUI NA)
Pronounced ‘twee nah', Traditional Chinese Massage is said to be the oldest massage system in the world. At the same time it is highly modern, in the sense that Chinese hospitals offer entire Tui Na departments, just as ours offer physiotherapy. The massage is carried out by highly qualified doctors.
SO HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBLE TUI NA?
Tui Na is definitely in the category of ‘therapeutic massage'. That means it is designed to solve specific health problems, rather than being merely comforting. (Tui Na can either be very relaxing, or highly invigorating. It all depends what you, the client, want and need). It is usually very much a deep tissue-type massage, and tends to be ‘brisk and businesslike' . It's sometimes called ‘Acupressure Massage', although there's actually far more to it than merely pressing acupoints.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The principles of Tui Na are exactly the same as those of Acupuncture . That is, the same meridians, Acupuncture points and sophisticated Chinese medical theory. (It is closely related to Japanese Shiatsu). Tui Na uses a combination of Acupressure and some unique massage techniques to achieve balance within the body. It is extremely effective, and thoroughly enjoyable!
WHEN IS IT USED?
Some ailments respond better to physical touch than to Acupuncture. For best results I often use a combination of the two in the same session. Sometimes I employ Tui Na on its own if the person is ‘needle-phobic', or just wants a great massage.
WOULD I HAVE TO REMOVE CLOTHING?
No. Tui Na was designed to be done through the clothing. There are no messy oils. You either sit in a chair or lie on an Acupuncture couch to be treated.
SO WHICH WOULD I NEED, TUI NA, ACUPUNCTURE OR BOTH?
Just ask me for advice! Ultimately it's up to you of course.
CHINESE MASSAGE CAN BE DONE EITHER ON ITS OWN AS A ONE-HOUR SESSION, OR AS PART OF AN ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT. YOU COULD ALSO BOOK A HALF-HOUR ‘RELAXATION' HEAD/NECK/SHOULDERS MASSAGE.
