* Does it hurt? Actually, not really. The needles are manipulated to make the acupuncture points ‘wake up' or ‘switch on'. There is a definite, split-second sensation when this happens. People struggle to describe this sensation, and it very much varies from person to person, but few would call it ‘pain'.
* How many needles would you use? I'm a minimalist, so as few as possible! The needles themselves are tiny, and very thin.
* Where would you put the needles? That is actually impossible to answer because, as explained previously, your treatment is geared uniquely to you. There are hundreds of acupuncture points to choose from, and I would usually choose points depending on the needs of the moment. However… It’s all negotiable! You would never have to have needles anywhere you don't want them, because there are always other acupuncture strategies I could use!
* But I'm really scared of injections … Me too! Acupuncture is absolutely nothing like having a hypodermic injection. It's a completely different experience. I’d say it’s much nicer.
* Do I have to take my clothes off? Not usually. Your socks maybe. I encourage people to wear baggy clothing to sessions so that items can be lifted or rolled up if where necessary. In general you wouldn't have to take anything off.
* How many sessions will I need? I can't answer that accurately until we've discussed your specific health requirements in some detail. Then I can usually make a pretty accurate ‘gestimate'. Again, everyone is unique and so there is no rigid ‘formula’.
* Is this instead of my medication from the doctor? No, no and again no! We call this ‘complementary health' because it works with your doctor or NHS worker, not instead of them. Very often people find they can reduce or even stop their medication after a course of acupuncture treatment, but that's the doctor's decision, not mine.
* Will it interfere with my conventional medical treatment? Highly unlikely. Acupuncture is known to have very few significant side-effects. If in any doubt, we'd check with your doctor first.
* Will it definitely work for me? Nobody on earth could give an honest 100% guarantee of that – and that goes for absolutely any therapy or medical intervention. However, I do guarantee to give 100% commitment to trying to achieve realistic goals we have set together. All I can truthfully say is: ‘Acupuncture works for the majority of the people, the majority of the time'. You really can't say fairer than that.
